MSM is an abbreviation for Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane. MSM is also called organic or biological sulfur. This natural form of sulfur is found in all living organisms and is present in our body fluids and tissues. It is found in many fresh foods including most fresh fruits and vegetables, milk and some grains. Even though it is present in fresh foods, it is easily destroyed in cooking, storing and processing which makes it a valuable supplement, especially for vegetarians as they may have a shortage of sulfur in their diets.

MSM has more recently become used as a dietary supplement because of the outgrowth of research on the well-known substance DMSO. MSM is a stable metabolite of DMSO, odorless and a very efficient method for supplementation. Actually, MSM is equivalent to DMSO but contains an additional atom of oxygen, so it is actually DMSO2.
